1st Grade
Religion: The children learn basic Bible stories, Christian hymns and songs of praise, and the Church year. They have weekly memory work. Our class participates daily in Jesus Time when we sing and pray, and attend whole-school chapel service once a week.
Reading: The children learn the basic sounds of the alphabet, long and short vowel spellings, consonant blends and digraphs, and Fry’s First 100 Words (sight words). They participate daily in shared reading and guided reading groups, where they learn decoding and comprehension strategies as well as fluency.
Writing: The children learn language, grammar, and handwriting using multisensory methods. The children learn to write complete sentences using nouns, verbs, articles, adjectives, capitalization and punctuation, as well as the writing process and different types of writing.
Math: The children skip-count in different ways, including even/odd numbers; practice daily calendar skills; learn to tell time to the half-hour; count and add various coins; learn basic shapes and patterns; learn addition and subtraction facts, including single- and double-digit addition; measure using standard and non-standard units of measurement; use different types of graphs and problem-solving skills.
Science: The children study physical science (machines, light/sound/heat, magnets; earth science (rocks, soil, weather); and the human body. Life science and life skills are learned using plants and gardening; and animal habitats and their care.
Social Studies: The children practice map skills, oceans and continents, landforms, communities, past and present, and world and family heritage.
In addition to these core subjects: music, art, library, physical education and computer are offered.
